The Significance of Apologetics

The word Apologetics means disproving of a false accusation or in other words a verbal defense against a verbal attack or even the justification of an action. Any social, political or religious vindication calls for an apology. In the case of the Church there is hardly any ritual or doctrine endorsed by it which has escaped criticism. Therefore a number of apologetics had to be rendered accordingly.

Questions have been raised against the foundations of Christian beliefs for which written answers have been written in the form of apologies. The Science of Apologetics has evolved from these.

Apologetics are the comprehensive scientific vindications of the accusations raised against the Christian faith. It seeks to instill in the questioner the reasonableness and trustworthiness of the Christian religion.

Finally it provides an answer to the most important question-"why should I be a Catholic'? It therefore implies acceptance of the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church which is the divine organ protecting the saving truths revealed by Christ.

Apologetics may be described as a positive historical discipline upholding the credentials of the Catholic faith.
