A General View of the Catholic Religion
The term ‘Catholic' in Latin means universal. This term was coined after the 16th century when Christianity underwent further divisions and new churches came into being. Until then there was only one place of worship synonymous with Christ which was simply called ‘Church'.
The Catholic Church looks upon the pope as the supreme authority. The first Pope or leader of the Catholic Church was St. Peter appointed by Christ. His successors were further acknowledged as leaders and it is believed that the Holy Spirit keeps the pope from erring thus making him infallible.
The beliefs of the Catholic religion are evolved from Scripture as well as Apostolic Tradition.
These beliefs are stated in the Nicene Creed which emphasizes on the divinity, teachings and the Gospels of Christ. This creed which was developed at a council of the Great Emperor Constantine is relevant even today in the spread of the Catholic Faith as it reflects the Church's sanctity and power.
The celebration of the Eucharist which is a sacrament of the church is a vital element of the Catholic rituals.
