Who is St. Joseph?

Saint Joseph has been made known in the New Testament of the Holy Scriptures and is the husband of Mary, mother of God. According to the Catholic tradition, Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus since He was conceived by the Holy Spirit through Mary but he acted as Jesus' foster father and guided Him as He grew up. St. Joseph is also the head of the Holy Family which is greatly revered in present times.

Joseph is recognized as saint by the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and Eastern Orthodox churches. Within the Roman Catholic beliefs, Joseph has been designated as patron saint for various places and things. On December 8, 1870, Pope Pius IX pronounced him as the patron of the Universal Church. He is also the unofficial patron against qualms and uncertainties in life and also the patron for fighting off communism and other terrorism acts.

Although Joseph's life was never clearly illustrated in the passages in the Bible, he is still considered as the model for a pious devotee who receives blessings at the time of death. Joseph is also honored the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker every 1st of May which was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955.
